European Hare
Lepus europaeus
In the well-known spring “boxing matches” it is not only males fighting each other – often the female strikes out at a male to fend him off or test his stamina. Leverets are born furred and with open eyes, lie alone in a shallow scrape and are suckled by their mother only rarely and briefly.

- Active all year, mainly at dusk and at night, but also by day in late winter and spring; in Central Europe the breeding season runs from about January to October, with three or four litters a year.
