Birds
Portraits and behavior, from the pheasant on the Lower Rhine to the bearded vulture in the Alps. Most of these images take a lot of patience in a hide.
MAKING GOD'S CREATION VISIBLE
I'm Samuel Houcken, a nature photographer from the Lower Rhine in Germany. On this site I show you my images of local wildlife and share my knowledge in e-books and free e-papers.
Portfolio
Here you'll find my images, sorted by subject. The galleries have been growing for years and new images are added regularly.
Gallery 01
Portraits and behavior, from the pheasant on the Lower Rhine to the bearded vulture in the Alps. Most of these images take a lot of patience in a hide.
Gallery 02
Dragonflies, praying mantises, fire salamanders and other small creatures. For many of these images I'm lying flat on the ground early in the morning.
Gallery 03
Butterflies and burnets, from the Apollo in the high mountains to the orange tip. The best moments come early in the morning, when the wings are still wet with dew.
Gallery 04
Deer, fox and hare at dusk. I always photograph these shy animals from a good distance.
Gallery 05
Mountains, waterfalls and starry nights from different regions of Europe.
Gallery 06
The abstract side of nature: patterns, backlight and silhouettes, selected from all galleries.
„You can't force a good nature photo. You can only be out there often enough when the light is right."
— Samuel Houcken
About Me
My name is Samuel Houcken. I'm a nature photographer and designer, mostly out and about on the Lower Rhine, where I grew up. I work with deliberately little equipment and show animals the way they really live: unstaged and in their habitat.
