The grizzled skippers show a chequerboard of white spots on a dark brown ground and fly fast and close to the ground. Some species look so alike that they can hardly be told apart externally – often only the larval food plant or an examination of the genitalia will settle it.

- Depending on species, the caterpillars feed mainly on members of the rose family such as cinquefoils, agrimony or salad burnet, while some species use only rock-roses; adults nectar on low-growing flowers.
