Pandion haliaetus

After a brief hover, the osprey plunges feet-first into the water, often submerging completely. A reversible outer toe and rough, spiny soles help it keep a firm grip on slippery prey.

Habitat

Long-distance migrant wintering mainly in Africa south of the Sahara; in Central Europe present from late March until late summer, with a few passage birds into November.
